What is Google Merchant Center, and how do you set it up?
Google Merchant Center is Google's free tool for getting your products in front of shoppers on Google Search, the Shopping tab, YouTube and Maps. You create an account, verify and claim your website, add shipping and returns, then upload your product data (Google now calls feeds data sources). Products can show in free listings at no cost, and in paid Shopping or Performance Max ads once you link Google Ads.
Key takeaways
- Merchant Center itself costs nothing. You only pay if you run ads through Google Ads, and Shopping ads charge per click.
- Setup order: Google Account, business details, verify and claim your website, shipping and returns, then products. The country you pick at setup cannot be changed later.
- Every product needs an ID, a title (up to 150 characters), a description (up to 5,000), a link, an image link, availability and price, plus a brand for new products and a GTIN where one exists.
- A price or stock level that does not match your landing page gets products disapproved. Misrepresentation can suspend the whole account with no warning.
What is Google Merchant Center used for?
Merchant Center is where your catalog lives for Google. You upload and manage product data there, and Google uses it to show your products across Search, Maps, YouTube and its other surfaces. Google describes it as a tool that helps shoppers "discover, explore, and buy your products", and it is free to use.
Google Ads is the other half. Merchant Center holds the products; Google Ads is where you pay to promote them. You need Merchant Center for free listings, and you need both, linked, for Shopping ads and retail Performance Max campaigns.
| Google Merchant Center | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| What it holds | Product data, shipping, returns, business details | Campaigns, budgets, bids, creative |
| Cost | Free to use | You pay for ads (Shopping ads are cost per click) |
| What it powers | Free listings across Google | Shopping ads and Performance Max (using Merchant Center data) |
| Do you need it? | Yes, for any product listing on Google | Only if you want paid placements |
If an older guide shows you screens labelled Merchant Center Classic, it is out of date. Google's help center says all merchants were migrated to Merchant Center Next, the redesigned version, as of 1 October 2024, and that feeds are now called data sources.
How do you set up a Google Merchant Center account?
Google's own sequence, in the order that avoids rework:
- Sign in with a Google Account. Each Google Account email can create only one Merchant Center account. Use a company login, not a staff member's personal account; one user can be added to up to 100 Merchant Center accounts.
- Enter your business details and country. Pick the country carefully: Google says it cannot be changed after setup.
- Verify and claim your website. Under Business information, open the Website tab, enter your URL and verify it. Verification proves you have admin access; claiming gives your account the exclusive right to use that site for product data. Only one Merchant Center account can claim a URL.
- Add shipping and returns. Shipping settings are required for free listings in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and India, and Google recommends adding your return policy in Merchant Center too.
- Add your products. Connect your store platform (Shopify syncs through its Google & YouTube sales channel), upload a file, or add products manually.
- Link Google Ads if you want paid ads. Shopping and Performance Max campaigns read your Merchant Center data once the two accounts are linked.
- Clear the Needs attention tab. Fix every flagged product and account issue before you spend a dollar on ads.
What goes in a Google Merchant Center product feed?
These are the core attributes from Google's product data specification. Attribute names and supported values must be in English; all attributes in one feed should use the same language.
| Attribute | When required | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| id | Always | Max 50 characters |
| title | Always | Max 150 characters |
| description | Always | Max 5,000 characters |
| link | Always | Must start with http or https |
| image_link | Always | 500 x 500 pixel minimum enforced from 31 January 2027 |
| availability | Always | in_stock, out_of_stock, preorder, backorder |
| price | Always | Number plus ISO 4217 currency code |
| brand | New products (not movies, books or music) | Max 70 characters |
| gtin | Strongly recommended where one exists | Up to 14 digits per value |
| mpn | Only if the product has no GTIN | Max 70 characters |
| condition | If used or refurbished | new, refurbished, used |
Images: Google says not to include promotional text, watermarks or borders, and is raising the minimum to 500 x 500 pixels for all product images. Upload at least that size now and you will not have to redo the catalog in January.
The title is the field that does the most work. Shopping ads are matched to searches on your product data, not keywords, so the words a shopper types need to be in the title and description.

Free listings vs Shopping ads: what is the difference?
Both come from the same Merchant Center data. One is free and you cannot steer it; the other is paid and you can.
| Free listings | Shopping ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No cost | Cost per click |
| Where they show | Across Google surfaces, including the Shopping tab | Shopping tab, next to Search results, Google Images, and Search Partners if you opt in |
| How they are matched | Product data | Product data, not keywords |
| Control | None beyond your data | Budgets, bids, campaign structure |
| What you need | Merchant Center | Merchant Center linked to Google Ads |
Is Google Merchant Center worth it? For free listings, yes, for any brand with a website: the cost is the time to set it up. Whether Shopping ads are worth it is a margin question. Work out your break-even ROAS first, then see what Google Ads costs per click.
Why do products get disapproved in Google Merchant Center?
Google splits issues into product-level and account-level. A product warning keeps the item live with limited performance; a product disapproval stops it showing anywhere on Google until you fix it.
The most common cause is a mismatch between your data and your page. Googlebot compares the price in your data source with the price on the landing page and in its structured data. Google lists these causes:
- Prices change on the site faster than the feed updates.
- Structured data markup on the page shows the wrong price.
- Prices load with JavaScript after the page renders, so Googlebot reads a different number in the HTML.
- Sale prices with the wrong start or end dates or time zone.
- Price or availability mismatches can also trigger a preemptive item disapproval, which needs a review to clear.
The fix is to make the feed match the site, not the other way round. Googlebot re-crawls disapproved products over the next few hours or days, and a matching product is reapproved after the next crawl. Scheduled file uploads or the Merchant API keep prices in sync automatically.
Why do Merchant Center accounts get suspended, and how do you get reinstated?
Account-level issues hit every product. Usually you get a warning email first, with a warning period of 7 or 28 days. Products keep showing, with limited performance. If anything is still unresolved at the end of the period, the account is suspended and your products stop appearing across Google.
Misrepresentation is the exception. Google treats most of it as egregious: scams, impersonating a brand, hidden fees and bait-and-switch pricing get an account suspended on detection, without prior warning, and reinstated only in compelling circumstances. Unavailable offers and unreliable claims get a warning at least 7 days before any suspension.
- Read the issue. Go to Products, open Needs attention and select View setup and policy issues.
- Fix the site and the data. Update the website and remove or correct violating products in your data source.
- Verify identity if asked. Some account-level suspensions require government ID or business registration documents before you can request a review.
- Request the review. Choose I fixed the issue or I disagree with the issue, then Request review. Reviews can take up to 7 business days.
Fix everything before you click Request review. After a second failed attempt Google can start a cool down of one week that grows with each unsuccessful review, and support cannot shorten it.
Shaazford runs Merchant Center as part of Google Ads management: feed fixes, disapprovals and suspension work sit inside Essentials ($500 a month) or Full Account Management ($1,600 a month, with creative), never a percentage of ad spend.
