What is the real cost for Google Ads in 2026?

Quick answer

There is no fixed cost for Google Ads: Google charges no flat or monthly fee, and you set the budget. On Search and Shopping you pay per click, at a price set in an auction by your bid and your ad quality. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average search cost per click at $5.42 across industries, so 1,000 clicks a month at that rate is about $5,420 before any management fee.

Key takeaways

  • Google Ads has no flat fees or monthly subscriptions. You set an average daily budget, and that is what controls spend.
  • On a busy day Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget, but monthly charges will not exceed your daily budget times 30.4.
  • LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks: $5.42 average search CPC across industries; $4.06 to $8.33 in the ecommerce categories below.
  • Management is a separate line. Shaazford charges a flat $500 a month (Essentials, management only) or $1,600 a month (Full Account Management, with creative), never a percentage of spend.

How does Google Ads pricing work?

Google says plainly that there is "no single price tag". Every ad slot is sold in a real-time auction where your bid matters, but so do ad quality and relevance. Your bid is the most you are willing to pay; you usually pay less.

What you pay for depends on the campaign type:

From Google's "How much do Google Ads cost?" guide, checked 7 October 2026.
Pricing modelUsed onYou pay when
Cost per click (CPC)Search, ShoppingSomeone clicks your ad
Cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM)DisplayYour ad is shown 1,000 times
Cost per view (CPV)YouTube videoA viewer watches a minimum duration
Cost per lead (CPL)Local Services AdsA customer gets in touch

So does Google Ads cost money if nobody clicks? Not on Search or Shopping: on CPC bidding you are charged only when someone clicks. Display campaigns bought on CPM charge per thousand impressions instead.

How much does Google Ads cost per click?

Your actual CPC is set by the advertiser below you. Google charges only what is minimally required to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the next ad down, and never more than your max CPC bid unless you use automated bidding or bid adjustments.

Ad Rank weighs your bid, your ad and landing page quality (Quality Score), the search context and the expected impact of your assets. Google says higher quality ads can often lead to lower CPCs. These are LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks for the categories most ecommerce brands sit in:

How much does Google Ads cost per month?

As much as you set. You choose an average daily budget. On busier days Google can spend up to twice that amount, but across a month you will not be charged more than your average daily budget times 30.4, the average number of days in a month. A $100 a day budget can spend $200 on a strong day and caps out at $3,040 for the month. Campaigns that pay for conversions can exceed 2x on a given day.

To size a budget, work backwards from orders, not clicks. An illustration using LocaliQ's shopping, collectibles and gifts averages ($4.14 CPC, 4.01% conversion rate):

  • Goal: 300 orders a month.
  • Clicks needed: 300 / 0.0401 = about 7,480 clicks.
  • Ad spend: 7,480 x $4.14 = about $31,000 a month.
  • If your average order is $100, that is $30,000 in revenue on $31,000 of spend: below break-even. The numbers that change the answer are conversion rate and order value, not the click price alone.

Illustrative arithmetic on published averages, not a forecast. Run your own margin through a break-even ROAS calculator before you set a budget.

Is there a Google Ads cost estimator?

Yes, three, and Google offers all of them at no cost:

  • Google Ads Cost Tool: high-level budget estimates based on your industry and location.
  • Keyword Planner: costs and search volume for the specific keywords you would bid on.
  • Performance Planner: forecasts for a live campaign, showing how changing budget or targets would change spend and results.

Use the Cost Tool to decide whether the channel is worth testing, Keyword Planner to build the first campaign, and Performance Planner once you have a few weeks of your own data. Google itself notes that actual results will vary by advertiser.

How much does Google Ads management cost?

Management is separate from ad spend: your spend goes to Google, the fee goes to whoever runs the account. Many agencies charge a percentage of ad spend, which means their fee rises every time your budget does.

Shaazford charges a flat fee. Essentials is $500 a month for management only: a dedicated specialist about 2 hours a day on campaigns, bids, negatives and a weekly report. Full Account Management is $1,600 a month and adds ad creative from our designers and video editors, landing page work and a monthly strategy call. Month to month, cancel at least 10 days before your next billing date, no setup fee.

Facebook vs Google Ads cost: which is cheaper?

Per click, Facebook is far cheaper. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average Facebook traffic campaign at $0.60 a click against $5.42 for Google search.

Per sale, the answer flips often. A Google search click comes from someone typing what they want to buy; a Facebook click comes from someone scrolling. Compare the two channels on cost per purchase and return on ad spend in your own account, not on CPC. Our Facebook ads cost guide has the Meta side of the numbers.

How do you lower Google Ads costs?

  • Raise quality before you raise bids. Google says higher quality ads can often lead to lower CPCs: tighter ad groups, ads that repeat the search, faster landing pages that match the ad.
  • Add negative keywords every week. Search terms reports show the clicks you paid for that could never convert.
  • Fix the feed. For Shopping and Performance Max, the Merchant Center feed decides which searches you enter.
  • Bid to profit. Set target ROAS from your margin, not from a benchmark.
