Amazon listing images: the rules, the sizes, and what each slot should do

Quick answer

Amazon lets a listing show up to nine images and recommends at least six plus a video. The main image must be on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling at least 85% of the frame and no text, logos, watermarks or props. Images need at least 500 pixels on the longest side and more than 1,000 pixels to enable zoom. Every other slot should answer one buyer question: size, features, use, trust or gifting.

Key takeaways

  • Up to nine images per listing; Amazon recommends at least six images and one video.
  • Main image: pure white background, product at 85% or more of the frame, no text, logos, props or multiple views.
  • Size: 500 to 10,000 px on the longest side; over 1,000 px enables zoom, and Amazon calls 1,600 px or more optimal.
  • Give each secondary image one job: scale, detail, lifestyle, how-to, origin and trust, then gifting or the range.

These rules apply to the main image only. The main image has one job, which is to win the click in search results at thumbnail size, so shape and colour matter more than detail.

How many images should an Amazon listing have?

Amazon allows up to nine images and recommends at least six plus one video. We design seven as standard, because seven covers every buyer question without repeating ourselves, and ten for listings that need more slots, such as sets, variations or products with setup steps.

What should each listing image slot do?

Shoppers read the gallery in order, on a phone, in seconds. So we give every slot one buyer question to answer before it is asked. This is the plan we use, with real slots from listings we designed:

2. Size and scaleShow it in a hand or with measurementsHow big is it?
3. Features and detailCallouts on what makes it betterWhy this one?

5. How it worksSteps, setup or useIs it easy?
6. Origin and trustWhere and how it is made, badges, guarantees you really offerCan I trust it?
7. Gift or rangePackaging, gifting, or the rest of the collectionWho is it for, and what else is there?

Slot 7, gifting: the gift buyer.

Can Amazon listing images have text?

Not the main image. Secondary images can: Amazon's guidance allows in-use shots, detail shots, size comparisons and usage instructions, and we found no Amazon rule that caps text on them. Our rule is readability on a phone: one short headline and no more than three or four callouts per image.

If you sell in more than one country, the text inside your images is part of the listing. Amazon says text in images and videos should be translated for each marketplace, which is why we build image text as editable layers from one master (see the Amazon Europe localization guide).

What size should Amazon listing images be?

Any image must be at least 500 px on its longest side, and no more than 10,000 px. Over 1,000 px turns on zoom, and Amazon's 2026 guidance calls 1,600 px or more optimal. Square images use the full thumbnail. We deliver square images well above the zoom threshold, as JPEG, which is Amazon's preferred format.

How much does listing image design cost?

Our listing images are $150 per listing for seven images and $200 for ten, flat, with variation images and two revision rounds included. Published 2026 agency ranges run $500 to $2,500 per ASIN for five to seven images; the A+ Content cost guide has the full comparison, and our listing image design page shows the process.
