What is the cost of Instagram ads in 2026?

Quick answer

The cost of Instagram ads is set by Meta's auction, not a price list. You pick a daily or lifetime budget, and Meta suggests starting with at least $5 and running for more than six days. WordStream's 2026 review puts Instagram at $0.40 to $2 per click, $0.03 to $0.08 per engagement and $2 to $6 per 1,000 impressions for better-performing campaigns. A sales campaign needs about 50 purchases a week per ad set to stabilize.

Key takeaways

  • Instagram ads are bought in Meta Ads Manager, in the same auction as Facebook. The winner is the ad with the highest total value: bid, estimated action rate and ad quality.
  • WordStream's 2026 ranges: $0.40 to $0.70 per click counting all clicks, $0.50 to $1.20 per click to a website, $2 to $6 CPM for better-performing campaigns.
  • Meta says an ad set exits the learning phase after about 50 results in a week. Your real minimum budget is roughly 50 times your cost per purchase, per week.
  • Adding placements does not increase the cost of your ad, per Meta. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements so its delivery system can make the most of your budget.

How much do Instagram ads cost in 2026?

Meta does not publish average prices. The most-cited 2026 compilation is WordStream's, which reviewed several published studies:

Source: WordStream, "How Much Do Instagram Ads Cost in 2026?" (updated 27 May 2026), compiled from several published studies. Other publishers report higher CPMs; treat any single figure as a planning range, not a quote.
MetricPublished 2026 rangeWhat it counts
Cost per click, all clicks$0.40 to $0.70Every click, including expanding the ad or tapping like
Cost per click to a website$0.50 to $1.20Clicks through to your destination URL
Cost per engagement$0.03 to $0.08Likes, comments, shares, saves
Cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM)$2 to $6Better-performing campaigns and ad sets

For a store, the metric that matters is none of these: it is cost per purchase. A $1 click that converts at 3% is a $33 sale; a $0.50 click that converts at 0.5% is a $100 sale.

How does Instagram advertising work?

You can buy Instagram ads three ways: boost an existing post from your Instagram profile, use Meta Business Suite, or build a full campaign in Ads Manager, which has the advanced options. All three run through Meta's ad auction.

Each time there is a chance to show someone an ad, Meta runs an auction among the advertisers targeting that person. The winner has the highest total value, which combines three things:

  • Your bid: what you are willing to pay for the result you want.
  • Estimated action rate: how likely this person is to engage with or convert from your ad.
  • Ad quality: judged partly from people hiding the ad and from signals like withheld information, sensational language and engagement bait.

Because relevance is two of the three factors, a better ad can beat a higher bid. Meta also says auction adjustments will never charge you more than your bid. One rule for new accounts: you must spend at least $10 being charged for impressions before you can switch to paying for clicks or other events.

How much should you budget for Instagram ads per month?

Meta's own guidance: set a budget you can run for at least seven days so the system can learn, and start with at least $5. That gets an ad live. It does not get a sales campaign out of learning.

The number that sizes a real budget is in Meta's learning phase rule: an ad set exits learning after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit. If your goal is purchases, budget for 50 purchases a week per ad set:

  • Expected cost per purchase: $30.
  • Weekly budget per ad set: 50 x $30 = $1,500.
  • Daily budget: about $215. Monthly: about $6,500 per ad set.
  • If you use a cost per result goal, Meta says the daily budget should be at least five times that goal.

Illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast. A daily budget is an average: Meta may spend up to 75% more on a good day, but never more than seven times the daily budget in a Sunday-to-Saturday week.

Which Instagram ad placements can you buy?

Meta lists these Instagram placements: Feed, profile feed, Explore home, Stories, Reels and search results. Your ad can also run on Facebook, Messenger, Threads, WhatsApp status and Audience Network from the same campaign.

Instagram Stories video1440 x 2560 pixels9:16
Instagram Reels video1440 x 2560 pixels9:16

Meta says adding placements does not increase the cost of your ad, and recommends Advantage+ placements, or at least six placements if you choose manually. Restricting a campaign to Instagram only narrows the auctions you can win. See Facebook ad sizes for every spec.

Instagram ads vs Facebook ads: which costs less?

You cannot buy Instagram in a cheaper auction: Instagram and Facebook ads are sold through the same Meta tools and the same auction. Published benchmarks differ by method. LocaliQ's 2026 Facebook benchmark is $0.60 per click for traffic campaigns; WordStream puts Instagram link clicks at $0.50 to $1.20.

The practical answer is to run both with Advantage+ placements and read the placement breakdown in Ads Manager. Cut a placement only when its cost per purchase is worse, not its CPC. Our Facebook ads cost guide covers the Meta budget rules in detail.

Do Instagram ads work for ecommerce brands?

Meta reports that 3.27 billion people interact with its apps daily and that 79% of people it surveyed have bought a product or service after watching Reels. Those are Meta's own numbers. Whether ads work for you comes down to creative and offer: on Reels and Stories, the first two seconds decide whether anyone sees the product.

That is why creative is in our Full Account Management plan for Meta: $1,600 a month includes UGC, static and video ads from our designers and video editors. Essentials, $500 a month, is management only. Neither plan takes a percentage of ad spend.

Questions

Questions, answered.

01

How much do Instagram ads cost per month?

Whatever you budget. For a sales campaign, plan on about 50 purchases a week per ad set, which is when Meta says an ad set exits learning. At a $30 cost per purchase that is about $1,500 a week, or roughly $6,500 a month per ad set.

02

What is the minimum budget for Instagram ads?

Meta recommends starting with at least $5 and running for more than six days, and says to budget for at least seven days so the system can learn. Ads Manager shows an alert if your budget is below Meta's minimum for your settings.

03

How much do ads cost on Instagram per click?

WordStream's 2026 review puts the average at $0.40 to $0.70 per click counting all clicks, and about $0.50 to $1.20 for clicks through to a website.

04

Do Instagram ads work?

They can, if the creative and offer are right. Instagram ads run in Meta's auction, which rewards relevant ads with lower costs, so strong Reels and Stories creative usually matters more than bid size.

How do I buy ads on Instagram?

Boost a post from your Instagram profile, use Meta Business Suite, or create a campaign in Meta Ads Manager for full control over objectives, audiences, budgets and placements.

06

Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?

Not by default. Both are sold in the same Meta auction. Run both with Advantage+ placements and compare cost per purchase by placement in Ads Manager.
