Guide · eBay business account

How do you set up an eBay business account and seller account?

Quick answer

To open an eBay business account, select Selling from the My eBay menu, choose Business account, and register as a seller with your legal business name, EIN, business address and owner details. Link a business checking account in the same name for payouts. Already on a personal account? Upgrade it in My eBay account settings, under Personal information, Account type. The upgrade is permanent.

Key takeaways

  • Use a Business account if you sell as a registered business: sole proprietor, single-member LLC, corporation, multi-member LLC or partnership.
  • The business name on your checking account must match the business name on eBay, and a business eBay account needs a business checking account. eBay does not pay out to savings accounts or PayPal.
  • eBay issues a Form 1099-K by 31 January when gross payments exceed $20,000 and transactions exceed 200 (2025 threshold), or a lower state threshold applies.
  • You can change your eBay username once every 30 days; feedback carries over. An upgrade from personal to business cannot be reversed.

Personal or business eBay seller account: which do you need?

eBay has two account types. eBay's fee pages set fees by category and Store tier, not by account type; the difference is who the account belongs to and what eBay verifies.

From eBay's Export Center (account types) and eBay Help (Registering as a seller), checked 7 October 2026.

eBay's fee pages list no separate charge for a business account. What a business pays is the same insertion and final value fees as anyone else, plus a Store subscription if it chooses one. Fees are in our eBay fees guide.

How do you create an eBay seller account for a business?

The sign-up runs in two parts: create the account, then register it as a seller account by starting your first listing.

  1. Open My eBay, then Selling. On any eBay page, open the My eBay menu and select Selling.
  2. Choose Business account. Fill in the registration form (or sign up with Google, Facebook or Apple) and your contact details, then select Create account.
  3. Start a listing. Back in My eBay, select Selling again, then List an item. eBay saves your listing as a draft and takes you to seller registration. Select Get started.
  4. Verify your phone number with a one-time security code.
  5. Confirm the account type and business details. eBay asks for business name, type and address and for beneficial owners, officers, directors or account managers.
  6. Add and verify your business checking account. Log in to your bank through eBay (the fastest route) or verify two microdeposits, which take 2 to 4 business days to arrive.

What does eBay need to verify a business seller?

For a registered business (sole proprietor, single-member LLC, corporation, multi-member LLC, partnership, publicly traded company or nonprofit), eBay's registration help lists:

  • Legal business name as it appears on your registration documents, and DBA name if you have one.
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN).
  • Business address: a physical place of business, not a PO Box.
  • Identity details for stakeholders: primary contact, beneficial owners, directors, partners, principal officers and anyone else with control.
  • If asked, documents such as an IRS 147C EIN letter, certified articles of organization, a government-issued business license or a Certificate of Good Standing. eBay does not accept a W-9 you filled in yourself.
  • Files must be current, readable, edge to edge, in JPEG, JPG, PDF or PNG; photo IDs up to 4 MB, other documents up to 10 MB.

LLCs can also set their tax designation (owned by an individual, owned by an entity, or filed Form 8832) so tax forms are issued correctly.

How do eBay payouts work for a business account?

eBay pays out to a linked checking account or a Visa or Mastercard debit card. For a business account, the business name on the checking account must match the name you register on eBay: if the bank says Joe's Hobby Shop, so should eBay. You cannot use a savings account or a PayPal account to receive payouts, which answers the common question of how to link PayPal to eBay as a seller: payouts do not go there.

After a sale, funds show as processing and typically become available for payout 1 to 2 days after the buyer's payment is confirmed. Payouts are daily by default; you can switch to weekly or biweekly (initiated on Tuesdays) or monthly (first Tuesday) in Payout Settings in the Seller Hub Payments tab. Banks then take 1 to 3 business days. On a weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule you can withdraw available funds on demand, and an express payout to a verified debit card or eligible bank account costs a flat $2.00 and typically arrives within 30 minutes.

How does eBay handle seller tax and Form 1099-K?

eBay asks every seller for an SSN, EIN or ITIN. It issues a Form 1099-K by 31 January for the previous year when your payments meet the reporting thresholds. For 2025, eBay lists the federal threshold as gross payments exceeding $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. You can also receive one if your state has a lower threshold or if backup withholding was applied.

Three rules catch businesses out. First, the 1099-K shows gross payments, before fees, refunds and credits (sales tax and canceled transactions are excluded), so it is not your taxable profit. Second, accounts sharing one tax ID are combined: two accounts that together pass the threshold each get a 1099-K. Third, the name on your eBay account must match the name on your tax ID and returns.

Download the form and a 1099-K detail report from Payments, Taxes in Seller Hub, and raise any concern with eBay by 30 March so it can correct the form by 15 April. On the sales tax side, eBay's orders report shows how much tax eBay collected and remitted on each order. This is not tax advice; take the forms to your accountant.

How do you change your eBay account type or name?

To upgrade a personal account to a business account: go to Account settings in My eBay, select Personal information, select Edit next to Account type, confirm the upgrade, choose legal entity or sole proprietor, then enter your business name, contact details and returns policy and save. eBay will ask for the same business and stakeholder details as a new registration. eBay is clear that once upgraded, you cannot go back to a personal account.

  • To change your eBay username: use the personal information section of My eBay. You can change it once every 30 days.
  • Your feedback score and account information move to the new username automatically. Your old username cannot be used by anyone else for 30 days, and an icon shows next to your name for 30 days after the change.
  • If your legal business name changes, update it in your account and expect eBay to verify the new details, as it may whenever you change relevant information. Keep it identical to your bank and tax records or payouts and 1099-K matching can fail.
  • Think before renaming. eBay's own advice: your username and feedback are your reputation, and buyers may not find you as easily after a change.

Brands doing $100K+ a month on Amazon or Shopify usually already have the entity, EIN and business bank account; the work is setting eBay up to match them and moving the catalog across. We do that as part of eBay management inside Omnichannel Growth at $3,200 a month.
