eBay for jewelry: how do you sell jewelry on eBay in 2026?

Quick answer

Using eBay for jewelry means following its Jewelry policy: say in the title, item specifics and description when metal is plated or a stone is treated, lab-created or simulated, and only call a real diamond a diamond. Jewelry pays a 15% final value fee on sales up to $5,000 and 9% above. Eligible pieces selling for $500 or more go through eBay's Authenticity Guarantee automatically.

Key takeaways

  • Disclose plating, treatments, lab-created and simulated stones in the title, item specifics and description. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are never 'diamond'.
  • Fine Jewelry needs a fine metal and a fine main stone. Unknown stones go in Fashion Jewelry.
  • Authenticity Guarantee is automatic for eligible jewelry at $500+ and watches at $2,000+. Sellers cannot opt out.
  • Fees: 15% for jewelry up to $5,000 (9% above); watches 15% to $1,000, 6.5% to $7,500, 3% above, plus the per order fee.

Is eBay good for jewelry?

It can be, if you can live with strict rules. eBay calls jewelry heavily regulated and has a dedicated policy for it, and it runs Authenticity Guarantee for jewelry, with experts physically inspecting eligible pieces before they reach the buyer. That inspection is the reason a buyer will pay four figures to a seller they do not know.

The trade-off is exposure. If a buyer receives the wrong item, or one that is not as described, they can return it for a refund even if you do not accept returns. On jewelry, an unstated treatment or a ring size that is half a size out is 'not as described'. Accuracy is the whole game.

What are eBay's rules for listing jewelry?

Metals: if a piece is plated, flashed or filled, say so in the title, item specifics and description (for example "gold-plated silver"). Stamps must meet the law: gold 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k or 24k; silver Sterling Silver, .925 or .999; platinum Plat, Pt, 950Plat or 900Pt.

StoneWhat the listing must say
NaturalYou may use the gemstone name in the title and item specifics
Treated natural'Treated' in the title, treatment type in item specifics, and in the description: the treatment, that it is not permanent, that it significantly affects value, and any special care
Lab-createdThe words 'lab-created' immediately before the gem name (such as 'lab-created diamond'), never 'man-made'; select lab-created in item specifics. The gem name is allowed only if the mineral composition matches the natural stone
SimulatedThe material or brand in the title (such as cubic zirconia); 'simulated' in item specifics and description; 'simulated' right before any gem name it imitates
Unknown type, treatment or gradeConsider certification; list in Fashion Jewelry and make no claims you cannot confirm

Diamonds: if the stone is not a diamond, the word cannot appear in the listing; name the material, such as moissanite. eBay bans diamonds, gemstones and metals from conflict sources or outside the Kimberley Process, requires rough diamonds to go in Loose Diamonds with a Kimberley Process statement, and bans diamonds mined, lab-created, cut or processed in Russia.

Fine Jewelry or Fashion Jewelry: which category?

To list in Fine Jewelry, both the metal and the main stone must be fine materials. Secondary stones can be either.

  • Fine metals: gold of 10 karats or higher (including rose, green, chocolate and white gold), silver of .925 or higher, and platinum-group metals of .850 or above, solid or plated with a precious metal.
  • Fine stones include diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, opal, garnet, tourmaline, moissanite, jade and quartz; eBay's policy lists them all. White topaz and mystic topaz count as fashion.
  • Fashion: any piece whose base metal is not gold, silver or a platinum-group metal, even if plated; all simulated stones; and stones such as agate, onyx, cubic zirconia, white topaz and stabilized turquoise.
  • Loose beads go only in the Loose Beads category.

For jewelry, the metal must be sterling silver 925+, gold 9K+, palladium 500+ or platinum 850+ (for plated pieces, the base metal counts). Stones are not required, but pieces whose main stone is amber, copal, turquoise, jet, mabe pearl, ivory, tortoise shell, plastic, pyrite, marcasite, chrysocolla, howlite, musgravite or taaffeite are excluded.

After the sale you ship to the authenticator's address eBay gives you, with signature confirmation if the item sold for $750 or more. Inspection is generally done within 2 business days, then the item goes to the buyer with 2-day secure delivery. If it fails, or its condition does not match your listing, the buyer is refunded and the item comes back to you. Ship to the facility within your handling time and eBay protects you from negative and neutral feedback once the piece passes.

What are eBay's fees for jewelry and watches?

Jewelry and watches have their own final value fee rates, charged on the total sale (item, shipping and tax), plus $0.40 per order over $10:

Rates from eBay Help, Selling fees, checked 7 October 2026. Dollar examples are our arithmetic. Store subscribers pay different rates.
SaleJewelry & Watches (except watches)Watches, Parts & Accessories
Rate15% if the sale is $5,000 or less; 9% if over $5,00015% up to $1,000; 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500; 3% above $7,500
$1,200 sale$180.00 + $0.40$150 + $13 = $163.00 + $0.40
$3,000 sale$450.00 + $0.40$150 + $130 = $280.00 + $0.40
$6,000 sale$540.00 + $0.40$150 + $325 = $475.00 + $0.40

Note the jewelry cliff: the 9% rate applies to the whole sale once it passes $5,000, so a $5,000 piece pays more in fees than a $5,100 one. Add 1.65% if you sell abroad without eBay International Shipping, and 6% more if your account is Below Standard.

How do you photograph and describe jewelry so it sells?

  • Background: eBay says white is generally best, but a darker background may work better for shiny or reflective items like jewelry.
  • Resolution: at least 500 x 500 pixels, about 1600 x 1600 recommended, up to 24 photos. Avoid flash and overhead light to cut glare.
  • Show scale and stamps: a coin or ruler for size, close-ups of hallmarks and any flaws, scratches or a broken clasp.
  • Measure exactly: ring size, stone size and chain length are the details eBay names as common problems.
  • No watermarks or logos on photos, and no stock images for pre-owned pieces.
  • Ship with signature confirmation on orders of $750 or more, or you lose protection if the buyer says it never arrived.

For jewelry brands doing $100K+ a month on other channels, eBay can be a strong outlet for pre-owned, sample and discontinued pieces. Our eBay team builds compliant listings and runs the account for a flat monthly fee.

Questions

Questions, answered.

01

Is eBay good for selling jewelry?

Yes, if you list accurately. eBay has a dedicated Jewelry policy and authenticates eligible pieces selling for $500 or more, which builds buyer trust, but buyers can return items that are not as described even if you do not offer returns.

02

What is eBay's fee for jewelry?

On eBay.com, 15% of the total sale if it is $5,000 or less and 9% if it is over $5,000, plus $0.40 per order over $10. Watches pay 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500 and 3% above.

03

Does eBay authenticate jewelry?

Yes. Eligible jewelry priced $500 or more is automatically sent through Authenticity Guarantee at no charge to the seller, and sellers cannot opt out. From $200 to $499.99 the buyer can add it for $40.

04

Can I sell moissanite or lab-grown diamonds on eBay?

Yes, if described correctly. A lab-grown diamond must be called 'lab-created diamond'. Moissanite is not a diamond, so the word diamond cannot appear; name it as moissanite.

05

Do I need signature confirmation to sell jewelry on eBay?

For orders of $750 or more including shipping and tax, yes, if you want protection against item not received claims and payment disputes. eBay International Shipping orders are the exception.

06

Can I list a ring with an unknown stone as fine jewelry?

No. eBay says stones of unknown type, treatment or grade should be listed in Fashion Jewelry with no claims you cannot confirm. Consider getting the stone certified.
