How to sell on eBay in 2026, step by step

Quick answer

How to sell on eBay: create a personal or business account, register as a seller with your ID and a checking account, price from sold listings, then build each listing with up to 24 photos, an 80-character title and full item specifics. Choose Buy It Now or auction, set shipping and returns, and list. You get 250 zero insertion fee listings a month; eBay takes a final value fee when the item sells.

Key takeaways

  • Registering as a seller means verifying your identity (SSN for individuals, EIN and owner details for businesses) and linking a checking account or Visa or Mastercard debit card for payouts.
  • Price from data: eBay's sold listings cover about 90 days, and Product research in Seller Hub covers 3 years of sales at no extra cost.
  • A listing that ranks needs the right category, a specific 80-character title, every required and recommended item specific, and up to 24 photos at least 500 pixels on the longest side.
  • Most categories cost 13.6% of the total sale (up to $7,500) plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order. Shipping is where most sellers lose the sale: eBay says more than 70% of its transactions ship free.

What do you need before you sell on eBay?

Four things, and having them ready saves days of payout holds. eBay verifies every new seller before it releases money, and a mismatch between your eBay name and your bank account is the most common reason payouts stall.

  • An account type that matches how you trade. Personal if you sell as an individual, Business if you are a registered business (sole proprietor, LLC, corporation or partnership). See our eBay business account guide.
  • Identity details. Individuals give full name, address (no PO Boxes), date of birth and Social Security Number. Businesses give legal name, DBA, EIN, business address and details for owners, directors and anyone else with control.
  • A checking account or Visa or Mastercard debit card in the same name as the eBay account. eBay does not pay out to savings accounts or PayPal.
  • A product list with identifiers (UPC, EAN, ISBN or MPN) where you have them. They match your item to eBay's catalog and pre-fill the item details.

How do you sell on eBay step by step?

This is the path eBay's own seller registration and listing guides describe, in the order a first-time seller meets it.

  1. Create your account. From the My eBay menu on any page, select Selling and choose a Personal or Business account. Fill in the form and your contact details.
  2. Register as a seller. Start a listing; eBay saves it as a draft and sends you to seller registration. Verify your phone number with a one-time code, confirm the account type and add your identity and payout details.
  3. Research the price. Search your item's sold listings and open Product research in Seller Hub to see average sold price, shipping and sell-through. Our sold listings guide shows the method.
  4. Create the listing. Search by product name or identifier, pick the catalog match or continue without one, then set condition, photos, title, category, item specifics and description.
  5. Choose format and price. Fixed price (Buy It Now) is the default. Auctions take a starting bid and duration, with optional reserve price, Buy It Now and Best Offer.
  6. Set shipping, returns and handling time. Pick services and regions, add local pickup for bulky items, and save the settings as business policies so every listing reuses them.
  7. Preview and list. Fix anything flagged in red, check the fee total shown above the List it button, and publish. Manage everything afterwards in Seller Hub.
  8. Ship and get paid. Print the label in Seller Hub, upload tracking, and eBay pays out to your linked account, daily by default.

How do you write an eBay listing that actually sells?

eBay search reads structured data first. A listing with half its item specifics blank drops out of the filters buyers click, however good the copy is. These are the specs eBay publishes for its listing tool:

Specs from eBay's listing guide (export.ebay.com), checked 7 October 2026.
Listing elementeBay's rule or limitWhat to do
TitleUp to 80 charactersBrand, product, model, key attribute, size or color. Words a buyer types, not adjectives.
PhotosUp to 24 per listing; at least 500 px on the longest side; JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEIC or BMPFill all 24 slots on hero products: angles, scale, labels, in use.
VideoMP4 or MOV, 150 MB limit, about one minuteShow the product working or being installed.
Item specificsRequired plus recommended specifics vary by categoryComplete every one. Buyers filter on them and eBay can surface them on Google Shopping.
ConditionNew, used, refurbished and so on, with a condition description if not newState flaws plainly. A high rate of not-as-described returns adds a surcharge to your fees.
DescriptionHTML does not show on the first mobile view; eBay says mobile is over 80% of trafficPlain text, one typeface, short paragraphs. No links to outside sites.

Bold title, subtitle, Gallery Plus and a second category are optional upgrades that can add a listing fee whether or not the item sells. For a deeper walk-through, see our eBay listing optimization guide.

Auction or Buy It Now: which eBay format should you choose?

For a brand selling repeatable stock, fixed price wins almost every time. Auctions suit one-off, rare or high-demand items where you want the market to set the price.

From eBay's pricing and listing guides, checked 7 October 2026.
FormatHow it worksBest for
Fixed price (Buy It Now)One price, buyers purchase immediately. Good 'Til Cancelled by default, auto-renews every 30 days until it sells or you end it.Brands, multi-quantity stock, variations (size, color) in one listing
AuctionStarting bid, buyers bid up, highest bidder wins. Optional reserve price and Buy It Now. Auto relist up to 8 times without insertion or upgrade fees.Rare, limited or collectible items
Best Offer (add-on)Buyers propose a price; you respond by hand or set automatic responses.Higher-ticket items and slow movers

How much does it cost to sell on eBay?

Listing is cheap; selling is where eBay earns. Every month you get up to 250 zero insertion fee listings (more with an eBay Store); after that, each listing costs $0.35. When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes shipping and sales tax: 13.6% in most categories on the first $7,500 per item, plus a $0.30 per-order fee on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above $10.

Some categories differ: books, movies and music are 15.3%, guitars and basses 6.7%, and sneakers of $150 or more 8% with no per-order fee. The full table, Store prices and worked examples are in our eBay fees guide.

How do shipping, payouts and selling limits work for new eBay sellers?

Shipping decides more sales than price. eBay says more than 70% of its transactions ship free, so build postage into the price and offer free shipping where the margin allows. If you list on ebay.com, domestic means the United States; to sell internationally, add an international service. US sellers who use eBay International Shipping on eligible listings pay no international fee; otherwise eBay charges 1.65% of the total sale when the buyer is outside the US.

Payouts go to your checking account or debit card. Sales show as processing funds first and typically become available for payout 1 to 2 days after the buyer's payment is confirmed; daily payouts are the default.

New accounts also have monthly selling limits. eBay reviews them every month and raises them as your sales and feedback grow; you can see yours in Seller Hub and request an increase when eBay messages you that you are close. Listings over the limit can be ended, so plan a large launch catalog in stages.

How do brands sell on eBay successfully at scale?

The tactics that move a brand from a few hundred orders to a real third channel are operational, not clever:

  • List in bulk. Seller Hub Reports takes CSV or XLSX templates to create, revise, relist and end listings; uploads usually finish in under 15 minutes. eBay's Merchant Integration Platform can upload over 50,000 SKUs in under 30 minutes.
  • Open a Store once volume justifies it. Basic and higher Stores cut the most-categories final value fee to 12.7% (up to $2,500 per item) and raise the free listing allowance to 1,000 or more fixed price listings a month.
  • Promote on margin. Promoted Listings with the general strategy charges an ad rate you choose, from 2% to 100% of the total sale, only when the item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad.
  • Protect seller level. Below Standard sellers pay an additional 6% on final value fees the following month. See eBay seller standards.

This is the work we do on eBay for brands already selling $100K+ a month on Amazon or Shopify: the catalog moved across with eBay titles and item specifics, Store set up, Promoted Listings set by margin and seller performance watched weekly. It runs inside Omnichannel Growth at $3,200 a month, flat, never a percentage of sales or ad spend.

02

Can you sell on eBay for free?

You can list for free: eBay gives every seller up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month. Selling is not free. When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee, 13.6% of the total sale in most categories plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order.

03

How do I sell on eBay as an individual?

Choose a Personal account when you register. eBay will ask for your full name, address, date of birth and Social Security Number, and a checking account or Visa or Mastercard debit card in your name for payouts. If you trade as a registered business, use a Business account instead.

04

How do I sell on eBay internationally?

Add an international shipping service to your listing. US sellers who use eBay International Shipping on eligible listings pay no international fee. Without it, eBay charges an international fee of 1.65% of the total sale when the buyer is outside the US.

05

How do I sell on eBay fast?

Price against recent sold listings rather than asking prices, offer free shipping where you can (eBay says more than 70% of transactions ship free), complete every item specific, use all photo slots, and add Best Offer on slower items.

No. A Store is optional. It lowers final value fees in most categories and increases your monthly zero insertion fee listings, so it usually pays for itself once a brand sells steadily.
