Guide · eBay SEO and Promoted Listings

How do eBay SEO and eBay listing promotion work in 2026?

Quick answer

eBay SEO means ranking in Best Match, eBay's default sort. It weighs how well a listing matches the search, popularity, price, listing quality and completeness, terms such as returns and handling time, and your seller record. Fix titles (80 characters), item specifics and photos first. eBay listing promotion then buys reach: General campaigns charge 2% to 100% of the sale only after a click, Priority campaigns charge per click.

Key takeaways

  • Best Match looks at relevance, popularity, price, listing quality, completeness, your terms and your seller record. There is no trick beyond doing those well.
  • Use all 80 title characters with the words buyers search, fill every required and recommended item specific, and add product identifiers.
  • Photos: up to 24 at no charge, at least 500 x 500 pixels, about 1600 x 1600 recommended, no logos, badges or watermarks.
  • General Promoted Listings charge only when an item sells within 30 days of an ad click. The fee stacks on top of the final value fee, so do the margin maths first.

What is eBay SEO and how does Best Match work?

eBay SEO is the work of ranking higher in Best Match, the default order of eBay search results. eBay lists what its algorithm considers:

  • How closely the listing matches the buyer's search terms
  • How popular the item is
  • The price of the item
  • The quality of the listing: description, photos and so on
  • How complete the listing is
  • Your terms of service, such as return policy and handling time
  • Your track record as a seller

Two of those seven are not about the listing at all: price and your seller record. A perfect title will not save a listing that is overpriced, or an account that is Below Standard, whose items eBay may place lower in Best Match.

How do you write an eBay SEO title?

eBay's rules for titles are short. Keep it to 80 characters or fewer, spell everything correctly, and do not run words together. eBay's Seller Center goes further: use all 80 characters and focus on relevant keywords. Special characters such as ! @ / * can stop a listing being found, so leave them out.

A structure that works for most products: brand, product type, model or line, the two or three specs buyers filter by (size, color, capacity, compatibility), then condition. Look at the eBay Seller Center's own example for a phone: brand, model, storage, color, carrier status and grade, all inside 80 characters.

The second row is eBay Seller Center's own example. The first is our illustration of the same structure.

An eBay listing title generator or SEO title builder can draft this, but check the output against these rules and the words buyers actually search. A title tool cannot see your item specifics or photos.

Which item specifics and photos does eBay reward?

Item specifics feed the filters buyers click, and Best Match counts completeness. When you list, eBay prompts for required details like size, color, brand and style. eBay's advice is not to stop there: add every detail that applies, plus product identifiers such as UPC or MPN, which help listings appear in more relevant searches and can auto-fill item details.

Photos are the other half of listing quality. eBay's published guidance:

  • At least one photo, up to 24 at no extra charge. The first is the main photo shown in search.
  • Minimum 500 x 500 pixels; eBay recommends about 1600 x 1600, files up to 12MB. 1:1 or 16:9 look best.
  • Main photo: the whole item, face-on. Use the others for angles, features and any flaws.
  • No borders, text, badges, logos, copyright notices or watermarks: eBay says they can affect your placement in search.
  • No stock or catalog photo when the item is used.

Why is my eBay listing not getting views?

Work through this list in order. The first four are eBay's own checks for listings that do not show up:

  1. Give it 24 hours. eBay says a new listing should appear in search within 24 hours, and only active listings appear. Drafts never do.
  2. Check the title for errors. Misspellings, words run together, special characters, or a typo that accidentally creates profanity (search blocks those).
  3. Check for duplicates. eBay will not show a duplicate listing until the identical active listing has at least one bid.
  4. Check it was not removed. Prohibited or restricted items, or listings that use another brand's logo, are removed and eBay emails you why.
  5. Check your seller level. Below Standard sellers are placed lower in Best Match and blocked from Promoted Listings.
  6. Check price, shipping and terms. Price, returns and handling time are Best Match factors. Compare with the listings that outrank you.
  7. Then fill the gaps. Complete item specifics, add identifiers, and replace weak photos before paying for ads.

What is eBay Promoted Listings and how much does it cost?

Promoted Listings are eBay's ads for individual listings, run from the Advertising tab in Seller Hub. There are two campaign strategies:

General campaignPriority campaign
You payA percentage of the total sale when the item sellsPer click on your ad
Price controlAd rate from 2% to 100% of the total sale (item, shipping, taxes and other fees), fixed or dynamicTarget daily budget, with an optional maximum cost per click
When you are chargedOnly if the promoted item sells within 30 days of a click. A click includes add to watchlist, add to cart or quick viewOn clicks. Monthly spend will not exceed 30.4 times the target daily budget unless you change it mid-month
PlacementsGeneral access to ad placementsPriority access and advanced targeting

eBay also sells Promoted Offsite (your listings advertised on external channels such as Google) and Promoted Stores. For fixed price listings in most categories, Promoted Listings are open to Above Standard or Top Rated sellers with enough account activity.

Is eBay listing promotion worth it?

It can be, but the ad fee sits on top of the final value fee, and both are charged on the total sale including shipping and tax. In most categories the final value fee is 13.6% plus $0.40 per order over $10. On a $100 order that is $14.00. Add a 5% General ad rate and the same sale costs $19.00 in eBay fees, before shipping and your product cost.

So promote listings that already convert, set the ad rate from your margin rather than eBay's suggestion alone, and judge campaigns on the metrics eBay reports: sales, ad fees and return on ad spend (sales divided by ad fees). Fix titles, specifics and photos first. Ads multiply a listing's conversion rate; they do not repair it.

Software helps with scale, not judgment. The best eBay listing software for a catalog is whatever keeps titles, specifics and stock correct across thousands of listings, from eBay's own bulk listing tools to a feed tool. For brands doing $100K+ a month, our eBay team runs listing SEO and Promoted Listings on the same flat monthly fee, never a percentage of ad spend.
