Guide · Ending eBay listings

How do you delete an eBay listing, end it or cancel it?

Quick answer

How to delete an eBay listing: you end it. In Seller Hub, open Active listings, tick the item and choose End. A fixed price listing can be ended at any time. An auction can be ended unless it has under 12 hours left and a bid that meets the reserve (or there is no reserve); then it must sell to the high bidder. Ending early may still cost a final value fee.

Key takeaways

  • There is no delete button for a live eBay listing. You end it, and it leaves search and moves out of your Active list.
  • Fixed price listings can be ended at any time. Auctions with bids follow a 12-hour rule and may cost a final value fee based on the highest bid.
  • Insertion fees are non-refundable once you are past your zero insertion fee allowance, and relisting charges a new one.
  • Ending listings with bids regularly can bring limits and restrictions on your account, so revise instead when the problem is a mistake.

How do you end an eBay listing in Seller Hub or My eBay?

eBay calls removing a live listing "ending" it. The steps, as eBay's help page describes them on 7 October 2026:

  1. Seller Hub, one listing: go to Listings, then Active, tick the box beside the item and choose End item from the drop-down.
  2. Seller Hub, many listings: tick each item, open Actions and select End. Auctions with bids can only be ended one at a time, with a valid reason.
  3. My eBay: go to Selling, then Active, find the item and choose End listing from its drop-down.
  4. Pick the reason honestly: eBay accepts reasons such as the item being lost, broken or no longer available, or a mistake like the wrong auction starting price.

If the problem is a typo, a wrong price or a missing detail, revise the listing instead. eBay itself suggests revising or adding to the description rather than ending.

Can you cancel an eBay auction that already has bids?

Sometimes. It depends on time left, whether there are bids and whether a reserve price has been met. This is eBay's own table, checked on 7 October 2026:

Source: eBay Help, Ending a listing, checked 7 October 2026.
ListingTime left and bidsCan you end it early?
Fixed priceAny time, with or without open offersYes
Auction12+ hours, no bidsYes
Auction12+ hours, bids, reserve not metYes. A final value fee may be charged on the highest bid
Auction12+ hours, bids, reserve met or no reserveYes, by cancelling all bids. A final value fee may be charged on the highest bid, or you sell to the highest bidder
AuctionUnder 12 hours, no bidsYes
AuctionUnder 12 hours, bids, reserve not metYes. A final value fee may be charged on the highest bid
AuctionUnder 12 hours, bids, reserve met or no reserveNo. You can only sell to the highest bidder

If a listing cannot be ended, eBay says you can contact the bidders, explain, and ask them to retract their bids. If the auction has already finished, you can ask the winner to agree to cancel the transaction.

What happens to bids and fees when you end a listing early?

  • Bids: ending an auction with bids cancels them, and eBay may charge a final value fee based on the highest bid.
  • Insertion fees: you get up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month (more with a Store). After that, insertion fees are $0.35 per listing in most categories and are non-refundable if the item does not sell.
  • Good 'Til Cancelled: fixed price listings renew automatically once a calendar month, and the insertion fee and upgrade fees are charged again at each renewal. Ending the listing stops the renewals.
  • Relisting: a manual relist is charged a new insertion fee (or uses a zero insertion fee listing). If the relisted item sells, you may qualify for an insertion fee credit.
  • Your account: eBay strongly discourages ending listings early and may place limits and restrictions on sellers who do it regularly.

eBay's fee page also says plainly that fees may apply if you end an auction-style listing early. Budget for it before you cancel a busy auction.

How do you remove or delete an eBay listing for good?

Ending is the step eBay documents. Once a listing ends it is no longer active, and only active listings appear in eBay search. Ended listings that did not sell sit in your Unsold list in My eBay and Seller Hub, where you can relist them.

To clear them out of that list, sellers on the eBay Community describe ticking the listings in Seller Hub's Unsold view and choosing Delete from the Actions menu. We could not find an eBay help page that documents this step, so treat it as how the tool works today rather than a published rule. eBay keeps listing photos for up to 90 days, so a deleted listing's photos will not be there for long either.

  • Stop automatic relisting first: in My eBay, go to Selling, then Active, and choose Remove Automatic Relisting from More actions. Auctions with auto-relist on can relist up to 8 times.
  • Watch refunds and cancellations: when you refund a buyer for a return or a cancelled order, eBay relists the item automatically unless you untick Relist item or Relist item after cancellation.

How do you cancel an eBay order after the listing has sold?

Once there is an order, you are cancelling a sale, not ending a listing, and the order cancellation policy applies:

  • You have up to 30 calendar days after you are notified of the sale. If the buyer has not paid, you can cancel after 4 calendar days.
  • You cannot cancel if the item has shipped or been collected, if the buyer has reported it not received, or if a return request is open.
  • Valid seller reasons: the buyer has not paid, the buyer used the wrong address, or the item is out of stock. Out of stock counts as a transaction defect against your seller standards.
  • A buyer's cancellation request must be answered within 3 calendar days. A cancellation cannot be undone, and you may be eligible for fee credits.

Selecting a false reason to avoid a defect is against eBay policy. For what defects do to your seller level, see our guide to eBay seller performance standards.

Should you end a listing or revise it?

Revise when the item is still for sale and the listing is wrong. eBay lets you change details and photos on a live listing; the main photo can be changed on a fixed price listing with no offers, or on an auction with no bids and more than 12 hours left. End only when the item is lost, broken, sold elsewhere or no longer available.

For brands running hundreds of SKUs on eBay, ending and relisting by hand is where out-of-stock cancellations and defects creep in. Stock syncing, not more ending, is usually the fix. That is the kind of process our eBay team runs for brands doing $100K+ a month.
