Guide · Automated pricing

How does automated pricing work on Amazon?

Quick answer

Automated pricing on Amazon means rules that change your price for you. Seller Central's Automate Pricing tool is included in the Professional plan ($39.99 a month): you pick a rule (track the Featured Offer, the lowest price or an external price, or adjust on sales), set a minimum and optional maximum price, and updates usually process in under 15 minutes. A lower price alone does not win the Buy Box.

Key takeaways

  • Automate Pricing is built into Seller Central and included in the Professional plan. It needs an active offer on each product you automate.
  • Rule types: competitive (Featured Offer, lowest price, lowest external price), sales-based, and business price and quantity discount rules.
  • Amazon is explicit that automated pricing does not guarantee the Featured Offer. Stock, delivery speed and order experience count too.
  • Third-party repricers live in the Selling Partner Appstore. They make sense when you fight other sellers on the same ASINs, less so for a brand selling only its own products.

What is Amazon's Automate Pricing tool?

Automate Pricing is Amazon's own automated pricing system inside Seller Central. What Amazon's page says it does:

From Amazon's Automate Pricing page (sell.amazon.com), checked 7 October 2026.
Rule typeWhat it does
Competitive pricePrices against the Featured Offer, the lowest price on Amazon, or the lowest external price; you can sit below, at or above the reference
Sales-basedChanges your price based on how many units you sell over a set period
Business price and quantity discountUpdates business prices and quantity discounts when your standard price changes

You set a minimum price and an optional maximum. Amazon says price updates are usually processed in less than 15 minutes, and a new rule or a changed parameter can take up to an hour to reach every product. Price changes made by Automate Pricing do not count toward your daily price update allotment, and prices sync to international listings created with Build International Listings.

How do you set up automated pricing in Seller Central?

The setup Amazon describes, in the order you do it:

  1. Check eligibility. You need a Professional selling account ($39.99 a month plus selling fees) and an active offer on each product.
  2. Choose a rule. Start with one competitive rule for products where other sellers compete, or a sales-based rule for your own brand.
  3. Set the floor and ceiling. Your minimum price should cover the referral fee, FBA fee and a margin you accept. Add a maximum so a lone offer cannot drift high.
  4. Assign SKUs. Apply the rule to single products or in bulk with the Automate Pricing file. Only the SKUs you choose are repriced.
  5. Review the 30-day history. Amazon suggests comparing Automate Pricing's 30-day history with your business reports to see the effect on Featured Offer percentage and sales.

How is the Buy Box (Featured Offer) won?

Amazon now calls the Buy Box the Featured Offer: the offer shown with Add to Cart and Buy Now when several sellers offer the same product. Amazon says the featured offer reflects the offer past customer choices show customers are most likely to buy. Its seller guide (April 2026) names what helps:

  • A competitive total price, including shipping. Featured Offer prices are commonly at or below the lowest-priced alternatives.
  • Fast, free shipping and a narrower delivery date range. Amazon says fulfilling orders yourself can be as effective as FBA.
  • A clean order experience: the correct, undamaged, authentic, unexpired item in the listed condition, charged correctly.
  • Stock. An out-of-stock offer cannot be featured.

When a page shows "See options" instead of a Featured Offer, Amazon says no offer is eligible, usually because of stock or a price that is too high or too low. Pricing Health in Seller Central lists offers that are not eligible and eligible offers priced within 5% of the Featured Offer price.

Seller Central repricer or a third-party auto repricer?

What are the risks of an automated pricing system?

A bad floor. A minimum that ignores fees turns every price war into a loss on each unit. Rebuild floors when fees change, as they did on 15 January 2026 and again with the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge from 17 April 2026 (see our seller news page).

Pricing errors. Amazon may make an offer ineligible to be featured and ask you to confirm a suspected pricing error when a price looks too good to be true. Inactive Offers in Pricing Health lists deactivated offers.

Fair pricing. Amazon's Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy lets it remove the Featured Offer or the offer itself if it sees pricing practices that could damage customer trust, and serious cases can lead to suspension.

External prices. For a brand, the biggest risk is often off Amazon: if your own site or another retailer is cheaper, your Amazon offer can lose Featured Offer eligibility. Amazon's pricing guidance is to keep your price plus shipping at or below the competitive external price.

Should a brand owner use automated pricing at all?

If you are the only seller on your ASINs, a competitive repricer has no one to fight. Use sales-based rules for clearance or slow sellers, and spend the effort on keeping your external prices aligned so you keep the Featured Offer. If resellers or hijackers appear on your listings, fix that with brand protection first; see our online brand protection guide.

For brands doing $100K+ a month, pricing sits next to ads, inventory and listings. Our Full Account Management plan at $1,600 a month runs all of it as one job.
