How does organic ranking on Amazon work, and what is BSR?
Organic ranking is where a product appears in Amazon's unpaid search results. Amazon does not publish its formula, but it says it shows the products customers are likely to be most satisfied with, using signals such as how often an item is bought, price, delivery speed, what is new, and return rates. Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is different: a category sales rank built from sales volume, not reviews or page views.
Key takeaways
- BSR is a sales rank inside a category. Amazon says it uses sales volume, weights recent sales more, and is not influenced by page views or customer reviews.
- Organic ranking is search position. Amazon says a top BSR does not always mean a high organic search ranking.
- Amazon names purchase frequency, price, delivery speed, newness and post-purchase satisfaction such as return rates as ranking signals.
- "A9" and "A10" are seller shorthand. Amazon's own seller guides do not use either name, and everything beyond Amazon's statements is practitioner observation.
What is Amazon BSR?
Amazon's own guide (September 2025) defines Best Sellers Rank as a metric on product detail pages that compares a product's sales with similar products. What Amazon says about it:
- Amazon calculates Best Sellers Ranks using sales volume data.
- Both recent and all-time sales count, but recent sales count more.
- BSRs are not influenced by page views or customer reviews.
- A lower number is a higher rank. #4 in a category means the fourth best seller among active listings there.
- A product can have a different BSR in each category it sits in, and ranks vary by Amazon store.
- BSR scores are updated frequently. Movers and Shakers lists show the biggest sales rank gainers over the past 24 hours.
Amazon also says BSR does not drive sales directly. It is a scoreboard, not a lever.
What is organic ranking on Amazon?
Organic ranking is the position a product takes in search results without paying for it. Amazon does not publish a formula. These are the signals it has named in public:
| Signal | What Amazon says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase frequency | Customer actions, such as how frequently other customers bought an item | aboutamazon.com, how customers pick the winners |
| Price | The product's price is a factor; adjusting your list price to stay competitive can improve your product ranking | aboutamazon.com; Amazon SEO guide (Sep 2025) |
| Delivery speed | Named as a factor | aboutamazon.com |
| Newness | What's hot and new is a factor | aboutamazon.com |

Is the Amazon A9 algorithm real?
"A9" (and the newer "A10") is what sellers call Amazon's search ranking. Amazon's current seller guides on SEO and Best Sellers Rank do not use either name or describe a fixed algorithm, so treat any article that lists "A9 ranking factors" with weights as opinion.
The closest thing to history from Amazon itself: in its response to the FTC's Sponsored Ads lawsuit, Amazon says its early search results favored items with many customer reviews, positive reviews, high click rates and high purchase rates, and that this held back new, sometimes more helpful products. Amazon says it changed its approach; it does not publish the current one.
Practitioner observation, not Amazon documentation: across the accounts we run, rank moves with sales velocity for a keyword, conversion rate on the listing, being in stock, and the keyword sitting in the title, bullets and backend search terms. Paid ads help organic rank only to the extent they produce sales for that keyword.

Does BSR affect organic ranking?
Not directly. Amazon's guide says a top BSR does not always equal a high organic search ranking, even though both relate to sales volume. BSR compares you with your category over time; organic rank is about one search term at one moment. A product can be #50 in its category and still rank on page one for a narrow keyword where it converts well.
Use BSR for competitor and category research. Use keyword rank and keyword data (from Brand Analytics if you are brand registered, or a third-party tracker) to judge search visibility.
What can sellers actually do to improve organic ranking?
Start with what Amazon documents, then layer on practice:
- Price competitively. Amazon says competitive list prices can improve product ranking.
- Keep listing quality and account health high. Amazon says both can contribute to search rankings.
- Pick the most specific accurate category and keep parent and child ASINs in the same category, as Amazon's BSR guide advises. A wrong category is covered in our miscategorization guide.
- Stay in stock and fast. Delivery speed is a signal Amazon names.
- Cut returns. Amazon names return rates as a satisfaction measure.
- Practitioner observation: put the main keyword early in the title, cover variants in bullets and backend keywords, and test images that lift click-through and conversion.
For brands that want this done properly, our Amazon SEO and listing optimization is $500 per ASIN as a one-off, or part of the $1,600 a month plan.
Is there an Amazon organic ranking tool?
Amazon does not publish a search rank formula, and third-party "Amazon organic ranking tools" estimate position by sampling search results for a keyword. Practitioner observation: results shift by shopper location, device and personalization, so read the trend line, not the single number, and check it against your sales by search term.
