Guide · Miscategorization

What is miscategorization on Amazon, and how do you fix it?

Quick answer

Miscategorization is when an Amazon listing sits in the wrong browse node or product type. Amazon's own documentation warns that with an incorrect node, customers may not be able to find your product. It also puts your Best Sellers Rank in the wrong category and can change your referral fee. Fix it by correcting the item type keyword and browse node, then asking Selling Partner Support to remap the ASIN.

Key takeaways

  • There are three different "categories": the browse node shoppers see, the product type your listing uses, and the fee category that sets your referral fee. They do not always match.
  • Amazon says an incorrect browse node can mean customers cannot find your product, and BSR is measured inside categories.
  • Fix order: Browse Tree Guide, item type keyword, parent and child alignment, then a remap request to Selling Partner Support with evidence.
  • Amazon's category team can refuse a change if it thinks the current path suits how shoppers search. Bring similar ASINs as proof.

What does miscategorization mean on Amazon?

Sellers use one word for three different settings. Knowing which one is wrong decides the fix.

From Amazon's Selling Partner API documentation and sell.amazon.com/pricing, checked 7 October 2026.
SettingWhat it controlsWhat Amazon says
Browse nodeWhere the product sits in Amazon's browse tree and which category its BSR shows inThe node indicates the section of the website where the product is assigned, so customers can find it easily
Item type keyword (product type)Which part of the catalog a new ASIN is placed in, and which attributes the listing needsUsed to place new ASINs in the appropriate place; select the most specific accurate term
Fee categoryThe referral fee percentage you payA product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers

Why does a wrong Amazon category hurt sales?

Visibility first. Amazon's developer documentation is blunt: if you do not provide a node, or provide an incorrect one, customers may not be able to find your product. Shoppers who browse or filter by category never see it.

Rank second. Amazon's BSR guide says ranks are measured within categories and subcategories, and advises choosing the most specific accurate category. A dog shampoo ranked in a general beauty node looks weak and is compared with the wrong products.

Fees third. Referral fees are set by fee category. On Amazon's current table, Beauty, Health and Personal Care charges 8% on items priced $10 or less, while Home and Kitchen charges 15%. A $9 product in the wrong fee category can pay almost twice the referral fee.

What causes miscategorization?

Practitioner observation from catalog work, not Amazon documentation:

  • A broad or wrong item type keyword chosen when the ASIN was created, often by an older flat file or a contractor.
  • The suggested node accepted by default when a parent ASIN is created.
  • Catalog contributions from other sellers on a shared ASIN.
  • Amazon reorganizing its browse tree, which retires or renames nodes.
  • Variation children set up with different product types from the parent.

How do you fix a wrong category on Amazon?

Work through these in order. Most cases are solved before step 5.

  1. Confirm what is wrong. Compare the breadcrumb and BSR category on the live page with where the product should be, and check the referral fee in your Fee Preview report.
  2. Find the right node in the Browse Tree Guide. Amazon staff point sellers to the category-specific Browse Tree Guide in Seller Central help. Choose the deepest, most specific node that fits.
  3. Correct the item type keyword. Amazon's documentation says to select the most specific accurate term. Update it in the listing or your flat file.
  4. Align parent and child ASINs. Amazon's BSR guide says parent and child ASINs should be assigned to the same category.
  5. Ask Selling Partner Support to remap the ASIN. Amazon staff list what to send: the ASIN, its current browse tree path, the path you want, and your reasoning, including similar ASINs that already use that path.
  6. Recheck the page and the fee. Confirm the breadcrumb, the BSR category and the referral fee after the change goes live.

What if Amazon refuses to change the category?

It happens. Amazon staff say that if the category team finds the current browse node hierarchy the most suitable, because customers search for similar ASINs that way, the new path may not be accepted.

Practitioner advice: answer with evidence, not repetition. List competing ASINs in the node you want, show that the product's attributes match that node, and reopen the case with that list. Avoid deleting and recreating the listing to force a new category: you risk the ASIN's history and any inventory tied to it.

If your catalog has more than a handful of these, it is usually faster to have it done once. Our catalog troubleshooting is a one-off project from $500, with no plan needed.

Questions

Questions, answered.

01

What is miscategorization on Amazon?

It is a listing placed in the wrong browse node, product type or fee category. Amazon says an incorrect node can mean customers may not be able to find the product, and it also puts the BSR in the wrong category.

02

Can I change my product category on Amazon myself?

You can correct the item type keyword and listing attributes yourself. If the browse node still does not change, ask Selling Partner Support to remap the ASIN with the current path, the path you want and similar ASINs as evidence.

03

Does the category affect my Amazon referral fee?

Yes. Referral fees are set by fee category, and Amazon says the fee category may differ from the category shoppers see. For example, Beauty, Health and Personal Care charges 8% at $10 or less, Home and Kitchen 15%.

04

Does the category affect Best Sellers Rank?

Yes. Amazon measures BSR within categories and subcategories and advises choosing the most specific accurate category, with parent and child ASINs in the same category.

05

Why did Amazon move my product to a different category?

Common causes are a broad item type keyword, another seller's catalog contribution on a shared ASIN, or Amazon reorganizing its browse tree. Check the item type keyword first, then open a remap request.
