How do you find an FBA niche and products to sell on Amazon?

Quick answer

An FBA niche is a specific customer need, not a product category. Amazon's Product Opportunity Explorer builds niches by grouping search terms around the products shoppers view or buy after searching. To find one worth entering, check demand and search trends in Product Opportunity Explorer and Brand Analytics, read the reviews and return data, confirm category approval and FBA fees, then order a small first batch.

Key takeaways

  • Amazon defines a niche as a group of search terms tied to the products shoppers view or buy after searching. Start there, not with a category name.
  • Product Opportunity Explorer shows demand, competition, search volume, reviews and returns. Brand Analytics adds Top Search Terms and Search Query Performance if you are brand registered.
  • Best Sellers and Movers & Shakers show what sells now. They are where everyone else is looking too, so treat them as research, not a shopping list.
  • Before you buy stock: check category approval, run the 2026 FBA fee math, and read the return data. Amazon says its own tool is a guide, not a guarantee.

What is an FBA niche, in Amazon's own terms?

Amazon's Product Opportunity Explorer "primarily categorizes products within niches, which represent specific customer needs." Amazon builds those niches by grouping search terms based on the products customers view or purchase after searching. So a niche is defined by what shoppers type and then buy, not by where a product sits in the browse tree.

The same tool flags "unmet demand": collections of similar search terms with lower conversion rates than the benchmark. Amazon reads that as high customer demand with low competition. That is the clearest official definition of a good FBA niche you will find.

Which Amazon tools show demand and search trends?

Five places, all run by Amazon. The first three are inside Seller Central; the last two are public.

How do you read Amazon search trends?

Amazon does not publish a public search trends chart. The closest official data is Top Search Terms in Brand Analytics, which Amazon says gives "a broad view of customer search activity across Amazon stores," and the trend views inside Product Opportunity Explorer. Search Query Performance then shows how your own brand converts on those searches.

What to look for:

  • Search volume that holds or grows across the same months year over year, not a one-week spike.
  • Searches where the top three clicked products change often. Stable top three usually means entrenched leaders.
  • Niches Product Opportunity Explorer marks as unmet demand: high search, lower than benchmark conversion.
  • Review complaints and return reasons you can actually fix with a better product or listing.

Movers & Shakers measures a 24-hour change in sales rank. Useful for spotting a trend early, risky as the only signal for an inventory order that takes months to arrive.

What are the most sold items on Amazon, and should you sell them?

The honest source is Amazon's own Best Sellers list, by category, which Amazon describes as its most popular products based on sales and updates frequently. We do not print a "best products to sell" list here: it would be out of date within days, and every new seller is reading the same one.

Best-selling items on Amazon FBA attract the most sellers and the highest ad costs. Use the list to learn what category leaders do (price point, image style, review count, pack size), then use Product Opportunity Explorer to find the adjacent niche they are not serving. Amazon's own guidance points the same way: look for high demand and low saturation.

How do you check a niche before you order inventory?

Six checks, in this order. Each one can kill a product idea cheaply, before money is tied up in stock.

  1. Shortlist niches in Product Opportunity Explorer. Browse categories, search a keyword or product, or start from the recommended and unmet-demand niches.
  2. Read the reviews and returns. The tool surfaces review insights and return activity. A niche full of fixable complaints is an opening; one full of returns is a warning. See our guide to the frequently returned item badge.
  3. Check whether the category needs approval. In Add Products, "Apply to sell" means approval is required. Amazon asks for invoices dated within 180 days, and reviews take 2 to 7 business days. Categories with enhanced safety requirements also need commercial liability insurance of at least $1 million per occurrence.
  4. Run the FBA fee math. From 15 January 2026, a large standard item of 1 to 1.25 lb priced $10 to $50 costs $5.04 to fulfill, before the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge Amazon added on 17 April 2026. Peak fees apply from 15 October 2026 to 14 January 2027.
  5. Map the search terms you would need to win. Pull the niche's top terms from Top Search Terms or the tool's search term view. Those become your title, bullets and backend keywords.
  6. Sample, then order a small first batch. Test a supplier's quality before you commit. Our product sourcing guide covers vetting and samples.

Does Amazon's data guarantee a winning product?

No, and Amazon says so. It reports that new products launched using Product Opportunity Explorer insights have 2.5x higher sales potential in their first three months (its 2025 internal data, sellers in the US, EU and Japan). On the same page it calls the tool "only a guide" and says Amazon does not guarantee any outcome. At Accelerate 2026 Amazon also announced new AI tools that match demand signals to a seller's catalog to suggest what to sell next.

For a brand already doing $100K a month, the best next product is usually one your existing buyers already search for. Your Search Query Performance data shows those searches. Catalog expansion is part of our Full Account Management plan at $1,600 a month.

02

How do I see Amazon search trends?

Amazon has no public search trends chart. Inside Seller Central, Product Opportunity Explorer shows search terms and volume by niche, and Brand Analytics shows Top Search Terms and Search Query Performance. Brand Analytics needs a Professional selling account and a brand enrolled in Brand Registry.

03

What are the most sold items on Amazon?

Amazon's Best Sellers lists show its most popular products based on sales, by category, and are updated frequently. Movers & Shakers shows the biggest gainers in sales rank over the past 24 hours. Both are public on amazon.com.

04

Should I sell the best-selling items on Amazon FBA?

Usually not head-on. Best sellers attract the most competition and the highest ad costs. Use them to learn what works in a category, then look for an adjacent niche with high demand and low saturation in Product Opportunity Explorer.

05

Is Product Opportunity Explorer accurate?

It uses Amazon's own search, browse and purchase data, which no outside tool has. Amazon still says it is only a guide and does not guarantee results, so validate demand, fees, approval and supplier quality before you order.
