What can sellers do about Amazon false reviews and fake reviews?
Sellers cannot delete Amazon false reviews themselves. You report them: use the Report link under the review when it breaks Amazon's Community Guidelines, and use Report Abuse in Seller Central if you suspect a competitor attack. Amazon decides what comes down. You can never ask a buyer to change or remove a review, or offer anything for one. Seller feedback is separate: request removal in Feedback Manager.
Key takeaways
- No seller can delete a product review. You report it, and removal is at Amazon's discretion.
- Amazon removes reviews that break its Community Guidelines: seller, shipping or packaging complaints, conflicts of interest, paid reviews, spam and abuse. Honest negative reviews stay.
- Asking a buyer to change or remove a review, even alongside a refund, is a violation. Amazon calls its policy zero tolerance.
- Amazon says it blocked hundreds of millions of suspected fake reviews in 2025, before customers saw them.
Can you remove a review from Amazon as a seller?
No. There is no delete button for sellers. Amazon removes product reviews that violate its Community Guidelines, reviews the reviewer deletes, and reviews it filters for unusual activity. Its seller FAQ is blunt that removal is at Amazon's discretion and not guaranteed, and that Amazon does not notify you when reviews are posted or removed.
What you can do is report the right reviews through the right channel. This table shows which reviews Amazon's own rules allow it to take down.
| Review | Can Amazon remove it? | How to flag it |
|---|---|---|
| Product review that only covers the seller, shipping, packaging, damage in transit or returns | Yes, it breaks the Community Guidelines | Report link under the review |
| Review by a competitor, an employee, a relative or anyone with a financial interest | Yes, conflicts of interest are not allowed | Report link; Report Abuse in Seller Central for a competitor attack |
| Review written in exchange for money, free product or a refund | Yes, compensated reviews are not allowed | Report link |
| Review with profanity, private information, external links, spam or hate speech | Yes | Report link |
| Honest negative review, including one that compares you badly with a competitor | No | Fix the cause and offer help through Buyer-Seller Messaging |
| 1- or 2-star seller feedback that is about the product, not your service | You can request removal | Request removal in Feedback Manager |
How do you report a fake review on Amazon?
Amazon gives sellers three routes. Use the one that matches the problem:
- Report the review. On the product detail page, find the review, select Report under it and choose the reason. Use this for reviews that break the Community Guidelines.
- Report a competitor attack. In Seller Central, open Help, choose Get Support or go to your Account Health dashboard, select Report Abuse, pick the violation type and submit the details.
- Report misplaced seller feedback. If seller feedback is really about the product, select Request removal next to the order in Feedback Manager.
- Keep a record. Log the review text, date, star rating and order data you have. A cluster of reports with evidence is easier for Amazon to act on than one-off flags.
Amazon's FAQ is clear that a review comparing your product unfavorably with a competitor's stays up if it follows the guidelines. Report what breaks the rules, not what hurts.

What are sellers never allowed to do about reviews?
Amazon's customer product reviews policy lists the violations. It also says actions by your employees, agencies and other partners count against you, even if you did not know. Never:
- Review your own product or a competitor's, or let family members or employees do it.
- Offer money, gift cards, discounts, free products, refunds or reimbursement in exchange for a review.
- Ask a buyer to change or remove a review, including while offering a refund or replacement.
- Send negative reviewers to a private channel while sending happy customers to Amazon.
- Use review clubs or services that tie free or discounted product to a review.
- Build variation families to pool star ratings across unrelated products.
- Put a request for a positive review, or any incentive, in the packaging.
The penalties Amazon lists include permanent loss of selling privileges, withheld funds, removal of all of a product's reviews, permanent delisting, lawsuits and public disclosure of the seller's name.
How do you spot fake reviews on Amazon?
Amazon says it uses tools and expert investigators to stop fake reviews before customers see them, and that it proactively blocked hundreds of millions of suspected fake reviews in 2025. Its 2025 report adds that its legal actions shut down more than 100 websites that facilitated fake reviews and scams.
For a seller watching their own listings, the signals worth logging are practical: a burst of 1-star ratings in a few days with no change in your product or returns, reviews describing features or problems your product does not have, near-identical wording across reviewers, and reviews that land right after a competitor's launch. None of these proves a fake on its own. Together, with dates, they make a credible Report Abuse case.
Amazon also asks shoppers to report review manipulation they see, such as gift-card inserts offering rewards for 5-star reviews, refund offers tied to changing a review, and QR codes that make a warranty conditional on a review.
How should you handle an honest negative review?
Treat it as product data. Amazon allows you to contact the buyer through Buyer-Seller Messaging to offer a replacement or help, as long as you do not ask them to update or remove the review. All of that contact has to stay inside Buyer-Seller Messaging: no email, phone or social media.
Then fix the cause. If several reviews say the sizing runs small, the answer is a sizing chart in the images and a clearer bullet, not a removal request. That is listing work, and it is where most rating recoveries actually come from.
To earn more reviews legitimately, Amazon recommends the Request a Review button and Amazon Vine. Neutral packaging inserts and one neutral Buyer-Seller message per order are also allowed, but never both a message and Request a Review on the same order.
Why does Amazon remove reviews on its own?
Amazon's seller FAQ lists four reasons a review can disappear without any action from you:
- The review broke the Community Guidelines.
- The reviewer removed it.
- Products that were wrongly listed as one item were separated, and their reviews split with them.
- Amazon detected unusual review activity on the product and stopped accepting or showing some reviews, or is showing verified purchase reviews only.
Reviewers also need to have spent at least $50 on Amazon.com with a credit or debit card in the past 12 months to post a review, according to the Community Guidelines.
