What is Frustration-Free Packaging on Amazon?
What is frustration free packaging? It is Amazon's top packaging certification (Tier 1): 100% curbside-recyclable packaging that opens easily, with no blister packs, plastic inserts, packing peanuts or welded clamshells, and contents removable within 120 seconds. It ships to the customer without an Amazon box. In 2026 it sits inside Amazon's Ships in Product Packaging program, which lowers FBA fees for certified items.
Key takeaways
- Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP) is Tier 1 of Amazon's packaging tiers. Tier 2 is Ships in Own Container (SIOC); Tier 3 is Prep-Free Packaging (PFP).
- For sellers, the program is now Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP). Amazon's old FFP shopper page now opens the SIPP page.
- 2026 FBA discounts for certified standard-size items run $0.04 to $0.23 a unit. Bulky items that need Amazon packaging pay a packaging fee of $1.51 to $4.04.
- Enrollment costs nothing. You can self-test items under 50 lb with no liquids or sharp parts; others need an ISTA-6A lab report.
What does frustration free packaging mean?
Frustration-Free Packaging means the box the product comes in is also the shipping box, and it is easy to open and recycle. Amazon's packaging site lists the Tier 1 (FFP) requirements:
- Made of 100% curbside recyclable packaging materials.
- Easy to open with minimal use of scissors or box cutters.
- No blister packs, plastic inserts, packaging peanuts, shredded paper or welded clamshells.
- All contents removable from the package within 120 seconds.
- Meets all the standards of Tier 2 and Tier 3.
Is Frustration-Free Packaging still a program in 2026?
Yes, as a tier. For FBA sellers the program is called Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP): certified products ship to customers in their own packaging "without any Amazon-added material." Amazon's old Frustration-Free Packaging page for shoppers now opens its Ships in Product Packaging page (checked 7 October 2026), and Amazon's vendor packaging site still lists Frustration Free Packaging as Tier 1, with full program guidelines updated in March 2026.
| Tier | Name | Packaging must |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Frustration Free Packaging (FFP) | Be 100% curbside recyclable, easy to open, free of blister packs, plastic inserts, peanuts, shredded paper and welded clamshells; open within 120 seconds; meet Tier 2 and 3 |
| Tier 2 | Ships in Own Container (SIOC) | Be a rigid 6-sided box, a rigid or padded mailer, or a bag; at least 6 x 4 x 0.375 inches; flexible packaging no larger than 18 x 14 x 6 inches and 7 lb; securely sealed |
| Tier 3 | Prep Free Packaging (PFP) | Not require additional Amazon prep |
Frustration free packaging vs standard packaging: what is the difference?
The difference between standard and frustration free packaging is who boxes the item and what the customer opens.
| Standard packaging | Frustration-Free / SIPP-certified | |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping box | Amazon may add a box, envelope or bag | Ships in the product's own packaging, no Amazon box |
| Opening | Retail packaging can include clamshells and ties | Tier 1: opens easily, contents out within 120 seconds |
| Recyclability | Not required | Tier 1: 100% curbside recyclable |
| FBA fee effect (2026) | Bulky items needing packaging pay $1.51 to $4.04 a unit | Standard-size discount of $0.04 to $0.23 a unit; no bulky packaging fee |
| Shopper choice | N/A | Shoppers see a checkout message and can add Amazon packaging at no extra cost; you keep the discount |

What fees and discounts apply in 2026?
From 15 January 2026, SIPP-certified standard-size items get a per-unit FBA discount by size and weight: $0.04 for a small standard item of 2 oz or less, up to $0.23 for a large standard item of 3 to 20 lb (apparel discounts differ slightly). The program covers products of 20 lb or less.
Bulky items changed. Amazon deprecated the $1.32 Large Bulky SIPP discount on 15 January 2026 and replaced it with lower fulfillment fees for SIPP items. Small Bulky and Large Bulky products that are not enrolled and need packaging now pay a packaging fee averaging $2.07 a unit:
| Dimensional weight | Packaging fee per unit |
|---|---|
| 0 to 5 lb | $1.51 |
| 5 to 10 lb | $1.68 |
| 10 to 15 lb | $1.97 |
| 15 to 20 lb | $2.60 |
| 20 to 25 lb | $2.92 |
| 25 to 30 lb | $3.47 |
| 30 to 35 lb | $3.60 |
| 35 to 40 lb | $3.78 |
| 40 to 45 lb | $3.80 |
| 45 lb or more | $4.04 |
Note: Amazon's sell.amazon.com program page still quotes a discount of "between $0.04 and $1.32" per certified item. The Seller Central fee page is the current rate card. Vendors get different benefits: Tiers 1 to 3 reduce or remove Amazon prep chargebacks, and Tiers 1 and 2 reduce or remove SIOC chargebacks.
How do you get products certified?
- Sell through FBA. Products need a buyable offer fulfilled by Amazon before you can enroll them.
- Check eligibility. Use the Ships in Product Packaging enrollment page in Seller Central, then update packaging to meet Amazon's flexible or rigid packaging requirements.
- Group similar products. Group by size, weight, material, packaging and product-to-packaging ratio, so one test covers the group.
- Test the hardest item in each group. Self-test if it is under 50 lb and has no liquids or sharp items, and take the required photos. Otherwise use an ISTA-certified lab for an ISTA-6A report.
- Enroll and set the first arrival date. Discounts apply only to units received after the first arrival date you enter. After approval, every unit must meet the standard or risk decertification.
Enrollment is free; packaging changes and lab tests are your cost. A US enrollment also enrolls the product for Amazon.ca automatically. Amazon can also enroll products in SIPP automatically. Packaging design for FBA is part of our Amazon design work.
