What are Amazon Platinum Keywords, and do they still work?
Amazon Platinum Keywords were a backend listing field that Amazon used to populate storefronts for sellers in its old Platinum program. Amazon's Seller Central help now describes the platinum_keywords attribute as no longer used, phased out and redundant, and says you do not have to fill it in. Put your backend terms in the Search Terms field (generic_keywords) instead, and keep it under 250 bytes.
Key takeaways
- Platinum Keywords are dead. Amazon's own help page calls the field redundant and phased out, checked 7 October 2026.
- They were used to populate Platinum sellers' storefronts, not to rank ordinary listings.
- The backend field that matters is Search Terms (generic_keywords): under 250 bytes, or Amazon Search ignores the whole field.
- Brand names, ASINs, temporary words like "new" and subjective claims like "best" are banned in search terms.
What are Platinum Keywords on Amazon?
Platinum Keywords were a keyword attribute in Amazon's listing data, platinum_keywords in flat files. Amazon's Keyword attributes help page says the field was previously used to populate Platinum sellers' storefronts. Platinum was an invitation-level program for large merchants, not something an ordinary seller could switch on.
Amazon's page does not give a date for the change. Ecom Brainly, an Amazon agency, dates the end of the Platinum Merchant program to 2016. Many older tutorials still describe the field as a ranking lever. It is not.
Do Platinum Keywords still exist in 2026?
Only as a leftover label. This is how Amazon's Keyword attributes page lists the keyword fields today:
| Field | Attribute | Status on Amazon's page | Length limit (bytes) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Terms | generic_keywords | Active. Free text | Under 250 |
| Item Type Keyword | item_type_keyword | Active. Valid values from Browse Tree Guides; assigns browse nodes | 250 |
| Platinum Keywords | platinum_keywords | No longer used; phased out; redundant | N/A |
| Intended Use | specific_uses_keywords | Being phased out | 150 |
| Target Audience | target_audience_keywords | Being phased out | N/A |
| Other Attributes | thesaurus_attribute_keywords | Being phased out | N/A |
| Style-specific Terms | style_keywords | Active for apparel. Valid values from Browse Tree Guides | 100 |
| Subject Matter | thesaurus_subject_keywords | Active. Valid values from Browse Tree Guides | 250 |
| Subject Keywords | subject_keywords | Media products only | 210 |
Amazon's wording is direct: you do not have to populate platinum_keywords. If the field still shows in an old inventory template, leave it empty.
What should you use instead of Platinum Keywords?
The Search Terms field, which Seller Central labels Generic keyword. Amazon's rules for it:
- Stay under 250 bytes. If you go over, Amazon Search ignores the whole field, not just the excess.
- Use synonyms, spelling variations and abbreviations. Skip common misspellings.
- Write in lowercase, separate words with spaces, and avoid punctuation.
- Do not repeat words, and skip short words such as a, an, and, by, for, of, the and with.
- Use either the singular or the plural, not both.
- Never include brand names (yours or others), ASINs, profanity, temporary words such as "new" or "on sale", subjective claims such as "best" or "cheapest", or offensive terms.
Breaking these rules can get the ASIN suppressed and, Amazon warns, put your account health at risk. For the full method, see our backend keywords guide.

How do you add backend search terms in Seller Central?
Amazon's steps for one listing:
- Open Manage Products. In Seller Central, select Manage Products.
- Edit the listing. Select the product, then choose Edit from the Fix menu.
- Enter the terms. On the Product details tab, enter your keywords in the Generic keyword field. The field stops accepting text at the byte limit.
- Update in bulk if needed. Download the Category Listing report from the Inventory menu (Selling Partner Support can enable it) and upload changes with an inventory file using a partial update.
Since 6 December 2023, the Generic keyword field is required for 23 product types, including bedding sets, blankets, board games, balloons and body care products.
Why are some backend keywords not indexed?
Amazon says it decides the relevance of search terms automatically and may not use every term you supply. Terms it deems relevant can change over time as it gathers data. Prohibited terms such as brand names or ASINs can get terms dropped too.
Bytes are not characters. Plain English letters and numbers are one byte each, but characters like the German ä can take two or more. Amazon does not count spaces or punctuation toward the limit.
Where do the best backend search terms come from?
Backend terms are the last 250 bytes of a keyword strategy, not the strategy. The phrases that drive sales belong in the title and bullets, where shoppers see them. The backend field is for synonyms, alternate spellings and secondary terms that would read badly on the page.
The best source list is your own data: search term reports from your Sponsored Products campaigns show the exact queries that convert. We build listings that way for brands doing $100K+ a month, as part of $1,600 a month Full Account Management, or as a one-off $500 per ASIN listing optimization.
